The scientific researches in Nepal are bearing results with the speedy development of science and technology around the world. The Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) has proven that with good investment and encouragement in technology, Nepal can make a u-turn and pioneer new innovations. In a magical twist to its long drawn out effort, NAST has come up with a new technology to turn unwanted plastic products into petroleum products. NAST’s latest invention sets the stage for two-pronged advantage as it helps the state in reducing the sporadic bouts of fuel crisis, and also deal with superfetation of plastic products. The NAST’s success comes on the heels of a long running scientific research and tests. NAST senior scientist, Dr Rabindra Dhakal, who has been involved in the research, termed it a sweeping development in bio-technology by bringing forth a new technology. One kilo plastic, one litre oil According to NAST scientists, one kilogram of plastic products can produce a litre of a petroleum product. The 30 per cent of the oil produced from the plastic products if merged with 70 percentage of the other petrol could turn the product into fuel that meets international quality and standard. The oil produced from this technology can be directly applied to bus, truck, tractor and other motor vehicles. NAST has also imported a machine from China with an aim to produce fuel by applying this technology. The machine which cost Rs 3.6 million has reached the Birgunj customs corridor at the tip of the southern border.
